In the narrow sense, it is the dialect of the Provence region of France. In the broad sense, it includes the dialects of southern France such as Auvergne and Gascony. It is also called Occitan or Occitan. It was less influenced by Gauls and Germanic languages than northern France, so although it developed from the same Latin, it has taken on a different appearance from the language of northern France. In the 12th to 14th centuries, a standard dialect of southern France was established, and the troubadours used it to write poetry. Since the 13th century, it has gradually been overwhelmed by northern French and lost its independence, and in the 19th century, it regained its status as a literary language with the Félibrige movement, but now it is merely a dialect of French.
