A customs union formed by the German Confederation. It was established in 1834 by merging three regional customs unions under the initiative of Prussia, which had been promoting customs union with neighboring countries since 1819. It eliminated internal tariffs and adopted a common tariff rate for external trade. All German states except Austria later joined, providing the economic foundation for German unification under Prussia.
