It is a perennial plant of the Ranunculaceae (APG classification: Ranunculaceae) and an early spring plant of the Anemone genus. The underground stems spread horizontally. The stems are erect and about 15 cm tall. The leaves are compound and trifoliate, with three whorls just below the flower. The flowers bloom from March to May, one at a time at the end of the stem, and are elliptical and about 3 cm in diameter with 5 to 6 white sepals. Anemone anemone is similar to this, but differs in that the base of the stem and leaf stalks spreads out. It grows in temperate deciduous broadleaf forests from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and is distributed in the Amur and Ussuri River basins and Sakhalin.
