Common Vetch

Japanese: コモンベッチ
Common Vetch
Also known as vetch or Zatwicken. A one- to two-year-old pasture plant of the legume family thought to have originated in the Mediterranean region or the southern Caucasus. The stems are long and weak. It forms 3-7 pairs of pinnate compound leaves, with the top 2-3 pairs forming tendrils. In early summer, short peduncles appear in the leaf axils, and one or two magenta or white flowers grow on them. The pods ripen to a dark brown color. It is not very cold-resistant. It is sown mixed with oats and other crops, and is mainly used for green cutting or silage, with little feeding as hay.
