A form of state in medieval Western Europe during the period when estate assemblies were able to restrict monarchical power. Also called a tribal state, the estates were the various estates that were eligible to attend the estate assemblies. The German states of the 14th and 15th centuries were particularly typical, so this term is often used to refer to them. After the 16th century, monarchical power became stronger, and when the sovereign state system was established, this transitional and dual state form also disappeared.
