A perennial plant of the Allium genus in the Liliaceae family. It is a type of small leek cultivated for food. The underground part swells into an egg shape like a shallot and divides into 3-5 pieces, all of which are covered in an onion-like scale-like skin. The above-ground part is long and cylindrical, about 30 cm tall, and looks more like a Chinese chive than a leek, but it is not flattened, and has a similar scent to leeks. Scallions do not bear fruit, and are propagated by division. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
