French and Indian War

The last French-British colonial war took place in 1755-63, when Britain and France fought over control of North America, drawing in their respective colonies and Native Americans. It can be considered the North American version of the Seven Years' War in Europe. The French side sought to secure and expand the fur trade route from the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes through the Ohio River basin to the mouth of the Mississippi River, while the British side sought to expand their agricultural land across the Allegheny Mountains into the Ohio River basin. Figuratively speaking, it was a mercantilist war that broke out in the Ohio River basin between the French colonies, who surrounded the British colonies in a semi-arc with lines (waterways) connecting points (trading posts), and the British forces, who tried to engulf them by expanding their area (agricultural land), and this war drew in the Native American tribes of the region.

1755‐63年，北アメリカ大陸の領土支配をめぐって，英仏両国がそれぞれの植民地とインディアンをまきこんで戦った最後の英仏植民地戦争。ヨーロッパにおける七年戦争の北アメリカ大陸版といえる。フランス側は，セント･ローレンス川と五大湖からオハイオ川流域を経てミシシッピ川河口につながる毛皮交易路の確保と拡大をはかり，一方，イギリス側は，アレゲニー山脈を越えてオハイオ川流域へ農業地を拡大しようとした。比喩的にいえば，点(交易所)をつなぐ線(水路)で半弧状にイギリス植民地を包囲したフランス植民地と，これを面(農業地)の拡大によってのみこもうとしたイギリス勢力とが，オハイオ川流域で衝突して起こった重商主義戦争で，これにこの地方のインディアン諸部族がまきこまれた。
