A novel by the German author Grimmelshausen. Five volumes. Published in 1668 (1669 printed on the book). Original title: Simplicissimus the Adventurous. Also known as the translation of The Tale of the Fool. An ignorant and naive boy called Simplicissimus (meaning "the great fool"), who grew up on a farm, is educated by a hermit in the forest, and then goes out into the world, where he experiences various things such as working as a page and a clown, committing robbery as a soldier, and being captured, and through these experiences he comes to know the world, but in the end he realizes the impermanence of this world and retreats to the mountains as a hermit. A sixth volume was later added, telling the story of a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in search of inner peace, and being washed ashore by a storm on a remote island in the South Seas, where he finds peace and ends his life there. Following the style of Spanish "rogue novels," this is one of the masterpieces of German liberal arts novels, depicting the growth of one man and the salvation of his soul in the chaotic society of the Thirty Years' War. It was long ignored, but was rediscovered by the Romantics. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
