Argon laser

Japanese: アルゴンレーザー（英語表記）argon laser

A type of ion laser that uses argon ions. It emits 488 nm (blue) and 514.5 nm (yellow-green) in the visible range, and 351.1 nm and 363.8 nm in the ultraviolet range. It is capable of a continuous output of about 1 W, and was widely used because there were few other suitable laser light sources in the blue and green ranges, but with the development of semiconductor lasers that emit blue and green, its range of applications has become limited. A high-current density arc discharge is required to ionize neutral argon by discharge and then pump it to an excited state.

イオンレーザーの1種でアルゴンイオンを使う。発振線は可視部では 488nm (青) と 514.5nm (黄緑) ，紫外部では 351.1nm と 363.8nmである。連続出力 1 W 程度が可能であり，青や緑の領域ではほかに適当なレーザー光源が少なかったので，よく利用されたが，青や緑を発光する半導体レーザーの開発とともに応用範囲が限られるようになってきている。中性アルゴンを放電によりイオン化し，さらにポンピングで励起状態に上げるためには大電流密度のアーク放電が必要である。
