Born: July 1, 1872 in Cambrai [Died] August 2, 1936, Paris He was a key figure in establishing French aviation in the early 20th century. At the time, most airplanes were biplanes, but from 1907 he devoted himself to research on monoplanes, and completed the Type XI monoplane with a 28 horsepower engine. On July 25, 1909, he successfully crossed the English Channel with this aircraft, winning a prize of 1,000 pounds from the London Daily Mail newspaper. Furthermore, the Type XI and improved variants were sold to many buyers, including the air forces of France, Britain, Italy, Austria, and Russia, and 800 were sold in the five years leading up to the outbreak of World War I in 1914. In the Great European Air Race of 1910, most of the aircraft that won the race were Blériot aircraft, which set world records for speed, altitude, distance, and endurance in July of the same year. During World War I, Blériot helped develop the famous Spad biplane fighter, and continued to manufacture civilian aircraft after the war.
