Liberty Enlightening the World

...To celebrate the 100th anniversary of American independence, French historian É. de Rabelais proposed donating a statue of the goddess to America for the sake of friendship between France and the United States. With donations from the French people, sculptor FA Bartholdi (1834-1904) designed the statue, which was made by G. Eiffel and has an iron frame covered with copper plates, and was erected on Liberty Island in 1886. The official name of the statue is "Liberty Enlightening the World," and it holds a torch of liberty in its right hand and the Declaration of Independence with the date July 4, 1776, in its left hand. The statue is 46 meters (152 feet) tall, and 93 meters (305 feet) tall including the pedestal. ...
