Born: March 30, 1858. Windigken [Died] October 7, 1919. British jurist born in Cambridge, Germany. Professor of law at the universities of Freiburg (1885) and Basel (1891). In 1895, he moved to England and became a professor of international law at Cambridge University (1908-19). He edited the Zeitschrift für Völkerrecht (Journal of International Law) and gained widespread recognition for his work International Law (2 volumes, 05-06). The book was revised by H. Lauterpacht and others and went through many editions. In this book, Oppenheim adopted a positive law approach and a dualistic stance that made a sharp distinction between international law and domestic law.
