...It is distributed throughout Japan and throughout the temperate and tropical regions of the Northern Hemisphere. In Japan, cultivated varieties such as purple knotweed f. purpurascens Makino (red knotweed), red knotweed var. fastigiatum Makino, and narrow knotweed var. maximowiczii Makino have been differentiated. The leaves are used as a spice in knotweed vinegar, and the cotyledons, which contain red idein, are used as a garnish for sashimi.
