A village in Yoshino District, central-western Nara Prefecture. Population 4,266 (1995). Located at the northern end of the Kii Mountain Range, in the upper reaches of the Nyu River, a tributary of the Yoshino River, the village is divided into a southern area made up of mountains over 1,000 meters high, and a northern area made up of hills 300 to 400 meters high. Fruit cultivation is thriving on the gentle slopes of the northern area, and Fuyu persimmons are particularly famous. Forestry areas extend to the southern mountains, and in recent years the production of polished logs and other products has become popular. The Yoshino No. 1 Power Station is located within the village, and Ano was a base for the Southern Court during the Nanboku-cho period, and is also famous as a plum blossom viewing spot. 奈良県中西部,吉野郡の村。人口4266(1995)。紀伊山地の北端,吉野川支流の丹生川上流域にあたり,村域は1000m級の山々からなる南部と300~400mの丘陵からなる北部とに二分される。北部の緩斜面での果樹栽培が盛んで,特に富有柿は有名。林業地帯は南部の山地に広がり,近年はみがき丸太などの生産が盛んである。村内に吉野第1発電所があり,賀名生(あのう)は南北朝期には南朝方の拠点であり,梅の名所としても名高い。
