1800‐70 Russian novelist. Although he was originally from the military, he developed an interest in archaeology and history, and was appointed director of the Historical Art Museum in the Moscow Kremlin, a position he held for the rest of his life. His breakthrough novel, The Wanderer (1831-32), is a travelogue based on the author's imagination. He subsequently wrote a series of works that mixed bizarre events with everyday life and historical facts, consciously removing the barriers between reality and fantasy, and made full use of grotesque descriptions, wordplay, and stylized narrative style. His most famous work is the four-part masterpiece Strange Incidents Drawn from the Ocean of Life (1846-63). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
