A representative Italian conglomerate. Montecatini was founded in 1888 in a sulfide ore mine, and developed into fertilizers, chemical fibers, and metals. Edison, the largest electric power company, separated its power division when electricity was nationalized in 1962 and expanded into petrochemicals and steel. The two companies merged in 1966 to form the company. Due to poor management, the company came under the control of ENI for about 10 years from 1971, and was nationalized, but was privatized in 1981. After reorganization, it became a holding company in 1983. In 1990, it merged with Ferruzzi Agricola Finanziaria to become a huge conglomerate centered on agriculture, chemicals, and energy. In 2001, it was acquired by Italenergia, a consortium of the major automobile manufacturer Fiat and the French electric power company EDF. → Related article Italy Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
