1609‐70 King of Denmark and Norway. Reigned 1648-70. The second son of Christian IV, he was chosen to succeed his brother Christian (1647). In 1657, Denmark entered into a war with Sweden, and the following year, he lost his ancient territory in the southern part of the Scandinavian Peninsula in the Treaty of Roskilde. In 1660, however, together with the citizens, he successfully defended the capital city that was under siege by the army of Swedish King Charles X. He established an absolute monarchy (1661) that eliminated the influence of the nobility, and codified it into law as the Royal Law (1665).
