A programming language jointly developed by the US Department of Defense and CODASYL in 1960. It is a procedural language intended for administrative tasks such as accounting and inventory management. Its structure is similar to natural language (English), making it easy to write programs in, and its versatility means it can be developed for any model. It is used in database systems such as mainframes because it excels at processing large amounts of data.

1960年、米国防総省と[[CODASYLが共同で開発したプログラミング言語。経理や在庫管理などの事務処理を目的とした手続き型言語である。自然言語（英語）に近い構成を持つためプログラムを記述しやすく、また汎用性が高いため開発する機種を選ばないという特徴を持つ。大量のデータ処理を得意とすることから、メインフレームなどのデータベースシステムで利用されている。
