A programming language developed in 1964 by John G. Kemney and Thomas E. Kurtz of Dartmouth College. It was developed to interactively control time-sharing systems on large computers. It became popular as a programming language for beginners because it is relatively easy to write. It was originally an interpreter-type language, but there are also compiler-type development environments such as Microsoft's Visual Basic, which is based on the BASIC language and allows users to easily create programs through interactive operations on GUIs such as Windows. Microsoft also unified the macro language for customizing its applications into Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), which has a language structure very similar to Visual Basic.
