The name given to a group of American documentary-style films that became popular immediately after World War II, and was coined by Louis de Rochemont. During World War II, Rochemont produced and provided for the magazine Time, creating a documentary series called The March of Time, which consisted of re-edited documentaries and newsreels to explain current events. After entering the film industry after the war, he used this experience to come up with and begin producing a format that combined documentary and feature films.
