Freyre, Gilberto de Melo
Born: March 15, 1900, Recife
[Died] July 18, 1987. Recife Brazilian sociologist and writer. He studied political science, sociology, and anthropology in Europe and the United States, and became a central leader among young intellectuals in Recife. In 1926, he organized the First Brazilian Regionalist Congress. He also worked hard to establish the Joaquim Nabuco Institute of Social Research. In 1949, he represented Brazil at the United Nations General Assembly. He developed research into the historical sociology of Brazil, providing a scientific basis for novels set in the northeast, and had a great influence on regionalist writers. His works include the novel Casa-Grande e Senzala (1933) and Sociologia (46).

[Died] December 9, 1851. Santiago Chilean soldier and politician. In 1811, he joined the Chilean independence army, and accompanied J. San Martín on his journey across the Andes (1817), contributing to Chile's liberation from Spain (28). After independence, he became a leader of the liberal faction, and during his term as president (23-26), he abolished slavery and drove the Spanish from the island of Chiloé. In 1830, he was defeated in a political struggle with J. Prieto and exiled to Peru, and the following year he was exiled to Australia, but later fled to Bolivia via Tahiti, and was allowed to return to his homeland in 1842.

チリの軍人,政治家。 1811年独立軍に加わり,J.サン=マルティンに従ってアンデス越え (1817) を敢行,チリのスペインからの解放 (28) に貢献。独立後自由主義派の領袖となり,総統在任中 (23~26) ,奴隷制を廃止し,チロエ島からスペイン軍を駆逐した。 30年 J.プリエトとの政争に敗れてペルーに追放され,翌年オーストラリアに流刑されたが,のちにタヒチを経てボリビアに逃れ,42年帰国を許された。
