Cuvier's beaked whale

A mammal of the family Beaked Whale, suborder Toothed Whales. It is the most common species in the family, and is found everywhere in the open ocean except the Antarctic and Arctic Circles. Adults reach an average body length of about 6 meters, with females being about 30 cm larger than males. The body is spindle-shaped with a small head and a short snout that smoothly transitions into the forehead. There is one nostril at the top of the head. The throat has a pair of V-shaped grooves that open backwards. There are no teeth in the upper jaw, and only one pair of round teeth at the tip of the lower jaw, but these may not be present in juveniles or females.

歯クジラ亜目アカボウクジラ科の哺乳類。同科中もっともふつうの種類で，南･北両極圏以外のいたるところの外洋に分布する。成体では平均体長6m前後に達し，雌は雄よりも30cm程度大きい。体は紡錘形で頭部は小さく，短い吻（ふん）は滑らかに前頭部に移行する。鼻孔は頭頂部に1個ある。咽喉（いんこう）部には，後方に開いた“ハ”の字形の1対の溝がある。上あごには歯がなく，下あご先端にのみ1対の丸い歯があるが，幼体や雌では出ていないことがある。
