In the materialist view of history, this refers to a society organized into classes based on differences in status and roles in the relations of production. In low-productivity societies where the social division of labor was not well developed, there were no class distinctions, and primitive communist communities were formed. However, as the social division of labor developed and productivity increased, private property developed, and so-called class society was established. This led to ancient slavery, medieval feudal society, and modern capitalist society, but in class societies, antagonistic class struggle brings about social change. Marxism holds that class society will be sublimated and a classless society known as communism will emerge.

唯物史観において，生産関係における地位と役割の差異に基づく階級別に編成された社会をいう。社会的分業が発達していない生産力の低い社会では階級的区別はなく，原始共産制の共同体をなしていた。しかし，社会的分業の発達と生産力の上昇に伴って私的所有が展開し，いわゆる階級社会が成立した。古代奴隷制社会，中世封建社会を経て近代資本主義社会へと続くが，階級社会では敵対的な階級闘争が社会変動をもたらす。マルクス主義では階級社会が止揚され，共産主義という無階級社会が出現していくとされている。
