A school of poets formed around Ronsard during the French Renaissance. Its manifesto, published in 1549 by Du Bellay as "The Defense and Exaltation of the French Language," advocated the creation of a poetry of France comparable to the Greek and Roman classics, and also experimented with neologisms. It laid the foundations for modern lyric poetry. Its name comes from the Pleiades, but the seven members were not necessarily fixed. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
