The conflict between the two dynasties ended with the reunification of the country by Mentuhetep II of the 11th dynasty, in keeping with the basic pattern of Egyptian history in which the South conquers the North and restores unity. From then on, Thebes became the center of Egyptian politics for about 1,000 years, and its patron god, Amun, maintained his position as king of the gods as a dynastic and national god.
