Masato - Mahito

A type of ancient surname. It is the first of the eight ranks of surnames established in 684 (the 13th year of Emperor Tenmu's reign) (the second rank was Ason, and the third rank was Sukune). Mahito was originally a Chinese Taoist term for Shinjin, but in the eight ranks of surnames it was read as "Mahito" and given to some of the descendants of the imperial family after Emperor Ojin. However, in the Nara period, the imperial family lost their power, and the number of clans with the surname Mahito gradually decreased.

古代の姓(かばね)の一種。684年（天武天皇13）に定められた八色(やくさ)の姓の第一位にあたる（二位は朝臣(あそん)、三位は宿禰(すくね)）。真人は元来真人(しんじん)という中国道教の用語によるものだが、八色の姓では「まひと」と読まれて、応神(おうじん)天皇以降の皇族の子孫の一部に与えられた。しかし奈良時代になると、皇親氏族は力を失っていったため、しだいに真人姓をとる氏族は減少した。
