Russian politician and economist. Born into a clergyman's family, he participated in the student movement from 1901, and in 1903 joined the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party, the predecessor of the Communist Party. He was active in Chita during the Russian Revolution of 1917, and was elected to the Central Committee at the 9th Communist Party Congress in 1920, and served as a member of the Politburo, Organization Bureau, and Secretariat. Before the 10th Party Congress in 1921, a "trade union dispute" occurred within the party, and he sided with the Trotskyites, so he was not re-elected to the Central Committee. He was active thereafter as a theorist on economic policy for the Trotskyites. He was known for his theory of "socialist primitive accumulation." In 1927, he was expelled from the party as an opponent of Stalin, and thereafter he repeatedly rejoined and was expelled again. He was later arrested and secretly executed. His books include "The ABCs of Communism" (1919, co-authored with Bukharin) and "The New Economy" (1926).

ロシアの政治家，経済学者。聖職者の家庭に生まれ，1901年より学生運動に参加，1903年共産党の前身であるロシア社会民主労働党に入った。1917年のロシア革命時にはチタで活躍し，1920年の第９回共産党大会で中央委員に選ばれ，政治局員，組織局員，書記局員を兼ねた。1921年の第10回党大会を前に党内で〈労働組合論争〉が起き，トロツキー派についたため中央委員に再選されず，以後はトロツキー派の経済政策面での理論家として活躍。〈社会主義的原始蓄積〉論で知られた。1927年スターリンの反対派として党を除名され，以後再入党と再除名を繰り返した。その後逮捕されて秘密裏に処刑されたといわれている。著書に《共産主義のABC》（1919年，ブハーリンとの共著），《新しい経済》（1926年）などがある。
