...the esophagus is an enlarged part of the digestive tract between the esophagus and the intestine. It was formed as a temporary storage area for food and later came to have the functions of digestion and absorption.

In invertebrates, the regional differentiation of the digestive tract is generally not remarkable, but in many animals the pharynx, which is an ectodermal foregut region ampulla, and the stomach, which is an endodermal midgut region ampulla, are formed, both of which are surrounded by developed muscles. The epidermis of the stomach contains secretory cells, various digestive glands are open, and cilia and cuticular projections may be formed.
