...In Burma (now Myanmar), Malaysia and the Eskimos, there is a greeting where you put your nose together and smell the other person, but this can be said to be an intermediate form between contact and non-contact. Gestures that do not involve physical contact include the bowing done by the Japanese, the joining of hands by Hindus in India and Buddhists in Southeast Asia and Japan (even in India Muslims usually embrace), and the Maori greeting with their tongues out. When Westerners have an audience with the king, it is customary for men to bow their heads and for women to pull one leg back and slightly bend their knees in greeting. ...
