Born January 5, 1893 in Schlüchtern [Died] November 22, 1975. Schlüchtern. German musicologist. He initially aimed to become a doctor, but later studied psychology and aesthetics in Munich, Leipzig, Berlin, and other cities. In 1925, he qualified as a professor at the University of Berlin by writing Das monodische Prinzip in der protestantischen Kirchenmusik (The Principle of Monody in Protestant Church Music). In 1933, he became a professor at the University of Kiel. In 1942, he became president of the Neue Schütz Society, in 1947 the German Musicological Society, and in 1948 the International Musicological Society. He published the Complete Works of M. Praetorius (20 volumes, 1928-34), and was responsible for editing and writing the music dictionary "MGG". His main work is Die evangelische Kirchenmusik (31).
