Nankaido Earthquake - Nankaido Earthquake
Also known as the Nankai earthquake, this massive earthquake occurred on December 21, 1946, off the coast of Shikoku, south of the Kii Peninsula, and reached a magnitude of 8.1. Damage was felt throughout western Japan, from the Chubu region to Kyushu, with 1,330 deaths, 102 missing, 2,632 injuries, 11,591 houses completely destroyed, 23,487 partially destroyed, and 2,598 burned. A tsunami caused by this earthquake struck the coasts from the Izu Peninsula to Kyushu, with wave heights reaching 4-6 meters in coastal areas of Mie, Wakayama, Tokushima, and Kochi, resulting in 1,451 houses washed away, 33,093 flooded, and 2,991 ships damaged or washed away.

南海地震ともいう。1946年12月21日紀伊半島南方から四国沖に起こった巨大地震で,マグニチュードは8.1に達した。被害は中部地方から九州にいたる西日本各地にわたり,死者1330人,行方不明102人,負傷者2632人,家屋全壊1万1591,半壊2万3487,焼失2598におよんだ。この地震による津波は伊豆半島より九州にいたる沿岸に来襲し,その波高は三重,和歌山,徳島,高知の沿岸各地で4~6mにも達し,このため家屋流失1451,浸水3万3093,船舶破損流失2991の被害を生じた。
