Plumeria - Plumeria

A general term for the genus Plumeria (Plumeria) in the Apocynaceae family (APG classification: Apocynaceae). It may be a shrub or a tall tree. The stems are fleshy and easily broken, and secrete a white milky liquid. The milky liquid is poisonous, but can also be used medicinally. They lose their leaves in winter and usually begin to flower after new shoots appear in spring, but in the tropics they are evergreen and bloom all year round. There are 12 species found in tropical America. P. rubra L. has leaves that grow in clusters at the top of the stem, are oblong, 40 to 50 centimeters long, and have red tubular flowers with a yellow center, 5 to 8 centimeters in diameter. They have five petals and a strong fragrance, and are popular in Hawaii and Tahiti for use as leis. There are many variations in the flowers, and forma acutifolia Woodson is white with a yellow center, sometimes tinged with pink. Lutea forma lutea Woodson is white with a deep yellow center and sometimes pink-red on the outside. There are many other horticultural varieties. It is often planted in tropical Buddhist temples. It is propagated by cuttings from spring to summer. It can tolerate dry conditions and grows well with the same care as a cactus. It blooms well in the summer outdoors in a sunny place.

キョウチクトウ科（APG分類：キョウチクトウ科）インドソケイ属（プルメリア）の総称。低木または高木。茎は多肉質で折れやすく、白色の乳液を分泌する。乳液は有毒であるが、薬用にもなる。冬は落葉し、春に新芽が出てから開花し始めるのが普通であるが、熱帯では常緑で四季咲きとなる。熱帯アメリカに12種分布する。インドソケイP. rubra L.は、葉は茎頂に固まってつき、長楕円(ちょうだえん)形で長さ40～50センチメートルになる。花は赤色で中心が黄色の管状花で径5～8センチメートル。花弁は5枚で芳香が強く、ハワイやタヒチではレイに好んで使われる。花に変異が多く、アクチフォリアforma acutifolia Woodsonは白色で中心は黄色、ときに桃色を帯びる。ルテアforma lutea Woodsonは白色で中心が濃黄色、ときに外面が桃赤色を帯びる。そのほかにも、園芸品種が多い。熱帯の仏教寺院によく植栽される。繁殖は、春から夏にかけて挿木で行う。乾燥に耐え、サボテンと同様の管理でよく育つ。夏は日当りのよい戸外でよく開花する。
