Sternheim - Carl Sternheim

German playwright and novelist. Born in Leipzig to a wealthy businessman, he later lived in Brussels. One of the leading figures in Expressionist literature, he is known for his concise, quirky style and biting social satire. He wrote many lively comedies that championed individualism, as well as novels, critiques, and autobiographies. His main works include the comedy series "Underpants" (1911), "Bourgeois Sippel" (1913), and "Snob" (1914), as well as the short story collection "Chronicles of the Early 20th Century" (1918), and the novel "Europe" (1919-20).

ドイツの劇作家、小説家。ライプツィヒの富裕な実業家の家に生まれ、後年はブリュッセルに住んだ。表現主義文学を代表する一人で、簡潔にして奇警な文体と、辛辣(しんらつ)な社会風刺が際だっている。個人主義の擁護を主題にした活気のある喜劇が多く、ほかに小説、評論、自叙伝などがある。おもな作品は、『下ばき』（1911）、『ブルジョア・シッペル』（1913）、『俗物(スノッブ)』（1914）などの連作喜劇や、短編小説集『20世紀初頭の年代記』（1918）、小説『ヨーロッパ』（1919～20）など。
