Also known as Chisimaio. A port city in southern Somalia facing the Indian Ocean. It is the administrative capital of Bassojuba State. It is located about 400 km southwest of Mogadishu, near the mouth of the Juba River. It was founded in 1872 by the Sultan of Zanzibar. It became a British colony in 1887, and an Italian colony from 1927 to 1941. It is a commercial center with a thriving fishing industry. It has a power station, a sawmill, etc. It is the shipping port for bananas. It has a population of 80,000 (estimated 1985).
