An ancient city in the central part of the Republic of Sudan. In Arabic, it is called Umm Durman. It is located on the left bank of the Nile River, facing the capital, Khartoum. It has been an agricultural and commercial center since ancient times, producing ivory carvings and other products. It was founded in 1885 by Muhammad Ahmad, the leader of the Mahdist sect.
