...When the finished product is finished with a mixture of sulfuric acid and nitric acid to dissolve the enamel, it is called "shrink-enamel cloisonné," and when it is fired with a transparent colored glaze, it is called "transparent cloisonné." Another popular technique in Europe is enamel champlevé, in which a pattern is carved into the metal base and then a glaze is fired. When a pattern is carved into the base and a transparent glaze is applied so that it can be seen, it is called enamel de basse-taille.
