In the Islamic era, as the political center of the empire shifted to Syria and Iraq, Yemen became a periphery of the empire, and at the same time became a base for Shiite and Kharijite rebel movements. Muhammad, the governor sent by the Abbasid caliph Ma'mun, restored control of Yemen, but established a de facto independent dynasty, the Ziyad dynasty (820-1018), in Zabid. Around the middle of the 9th century, a Zaydi imam gained independence in Sa'ada in the north and established the Rassi dynasty, which later moved to Sana'a. This Zaydi regime continued to rise and fall, intermittently, until the coup d'état of 1962. ...
