Kishi Takedo
Year of death: July 27, 1897
Year of birth: April 22, 1826 (May 28, 1826)
A Japanese painter from the late Edo period to the Meiji period. The son of a samurai of the Hikone domain. Born in Hikone, his name was Shōroku. He first studied the Kano school under the domain's official painter, then in 1842 he went to Kyoto to become a student of Kano Eigaku. The following year he became a student of Kishi Renzan, learning the Kishi school, and was selected to become his adopted son. At the end of the Edo period, he painted works for Nijō Castle and the Imperial Palace, but during the period of decline in the art world after the Meiji Restoration, he also painted sketches for Yuzen. He also painted landscapes incorporating perspective expressions, such as "Otsu Karasakizu" (private collection), but continued the tradition of the Kishi school and specialized in tigers, winning awards at the Third Domestic Industrial Exposition in 1890 and at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. In 1894 he became an artist at the Imperial Household.
