Born: June 27, 1908, Cordesburg, Minas Gerais
[Died] November 19, 1967, Rio de Janeiro Brazilian poet and novelist. He spent his childhood in the remote Urcuia region, which is said to have shaped his regionalist outlook. He studied medicine in Belo Horizonte and practiced medicine in the interior of Minas Gerais, but later became a diplomat, working at embassies in Bogotá, Paris, and elsewhere. He also made his debut as a poet, winning the Poetry Prize of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (1936) and the Machado de Assis Prize of the National Library Association (1956). His innovative works were highly praised by critics. He is known for his many unique neologisms and for being difficult to understand. He became a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters in 1963. Representative works include the poetry collection Magma (36), the novel Sagarana (46), Gom o Vaqueiro Mariano (With the Shepherd Mariano) (52), Corpo de Baile (2 volumes, 56) and Grande Sertão: Veredes (56).

[Died] March 15, 1673. Italian painter, copperplate engraver, poet, and musician. He studied under A. Falcone in Naples, and was active mainly in Rome and Florence, where he displayed his talents in many areas. He developed a unique field known as war painting, and created mysterious moods and heightened emotions through his depictions of light and atmosphere. He was especially praised in England, and became a pioneer of Romantic landscape painting. His representative works include "Landscape with Soldier and Hunter" (Louvre Museum) and "War Scenes" (Pitti Gallery, Florence).

イタリアの画家,銅版画家,詩人,音楽家。ナポリで A.ファルコーネに学び,おもにローマとフィレンツェで活躍,多方面に才能を示した。戦争画という独特な領域を開発し,また,光や大気の描写によって怪奇的な気分や感情の高まりを生み出し,特にイギリスで称賛され,ロマン主義的風景画の先駆となった。代表作『兵士と猟師のいる風景』 (ルーブル美術館) ,『戦争図』 (フィレンツェ,ピッティ美術館) 。
