Aleksey Alekseevich Brusilov

A general in Imperial Russia and an advisor to the Red Army after the revolution. Born in Tiflis (now Tbilisi), Georgia, as the son of a general. He served as a cavalry officer from 1872, and participated in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. In World War I, he served first with the Eighth Army, and then from 1916 to 1917 as commander-in-chief of the Southwestern Front, and was famous for his successful operation to divide the Austrian army in 1916. After the February Revolution, he was appointed Supreme Commander by the Provisional Government, and replaced Kornilov after the failure of the summer offensive in July. After the October Revolution, he retired, and in May 1920, when the Polish army invaded Soviet Russia during the Soviet-Polish War, he joined the Red Army and took on an advisory role.
