Aleksey Alekseevich Brusilov

A general in Imperial Russia and an advisor to the Red Army after the revolution. Born in Tiflis (now Tbilisi), Georgia, as the son of a general. He served as a cavalry officer from 1872, and participated in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. In World War I, he served first with the Eighth Army, and then from 1916 to 1917 as commander-in-chief of the Southwestern Front, and was famous for his successful operation to divide the Austrian army in 1916. After the February Revolution, he was appointed Supreme Commander by the Provisional Government, and replaced Kornilov after the failure of the summer offensive in July. After the October Revolution, he retired, and in May 1920, when the Polish army invaded Soviet Russia during the Soviet-Polish War, he joined the Red Army and took on an advisory role.

帝政ロシアの将軍、革命後の赤軍顧問。ジョージア（グルジア）のチフリス（現、トビリシ）に将軍の子として生まれる。1872年より騎兵士官として勤務、1877～1878年のロシア・トルコ戦争に参加。第一次世界大戦で最初は第八軍で、1916～1917年には西南方面軍総司令官として活躍、1916年のオーストリア軍分断作戦の成功で名をはせた。二月革命後、臨時政府により最高総司令官に任命され、7月の夏期攻勢の失敗でコルニーロフと交替。十月革命後は引退し1920年5月、ソビエト・ポーランド戦争でポーランド軍がソビエト・ロシアに侵攻すると赤軍に入り、顧問的任務についた。
