Karlgren - K. Bernhard J. Karlgren

Swedish sinologist. Known in Asia by his Chinese name Gaobenhan. After graduating from Uppsala University in 1909, he aspired to study Chinese language phonology and, in particular, linked his investigation of the northwestern dialect with paleophonology, opening up new horizons in Chinese philology and ancient studies. His most famous work is Studies in Chinese Phonology (or, more accurately, Phonetics) (1915-1926), an expanded version of his doctoral thesis. Although he rarely held teaching positions, he led the country's academic world, serving as vice-rector of the University of Gothenburg, director of the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, president of the Royal Academy of Literature, History and Antiquities, and president of the Swedish Foundation for the Humanities.

スウェーデンの中国学者。アジアでは高本漢(ガオベンハン)の中国名によっても知られる。1909年ウプサラ大学卒業後、中国語の音韻の研究から中国研究を志し、とくにその西北方言の調査と古音学とを結び付けて、中国文献学、古代学に新天地を開いた。学位論文を増補した『中国音韻学（正確には「音声学」）研究』（1915～1926）は、もっとも著名である。教職にはほとんどつかなかったが、イョーテボリ（ゲーテボルグ）大学副学長、極東古物博物館長、王立文史古物アカデミー院長、スウェーデン人文科学財団長などを務めて、一国の学界を指導した。
