Request - Ukebumi

Japanese:
Request - Ukebumi

A style of ancient document. Especially in the Middle Ages, it was used to confirm or promise something to a superior, such as a report, consent, application, or petition. It can take the form of a petition with a notation such as "Ukuru tokoro kudan no gotoshi" or a simple letter, and is characterized by the inclusion of words such as "request" and "acknowledge." It is submitted as a pledge of sincerity in relation to documents issued by subordinates, positions, and grants of property. Representative examples include petitions by samurai of the rank of shugo or lower in response to Shogunate imperial edicts and petitions by manor officials in response to pensions for Shoen positions, and each played a key role in mediating the Shogunate's chain of command and the manorial land ownership system.
