Portland (English spelling)
Oregon is the largest city in the state of Oregon in the United States. It is located near the confluence of the Willamette River and the Columbia River, and across the river is Vancouver, Washington. It was settled in 1829 and developed through several gold rushes and immigrants from the Oregon Trail. It is a strategic location where the Columbia River and a north-south road intersect, and its hinterland is the basins of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. Shipbuilding, chemicals, and smelting (mainly aluminum) industries have developed due to port construction, the completion of the Northern Pacific Railroad, and the development of power sources. Other important industries include food processing, electronics, lumber, and textiles. Rose cultivation is popular, and the Rose Festival is held every June. The city is divided into old and new areas by the river, and eight bridges connect the two. Portland is home to the University of Portland (founded in 1901), Lewis and Clark College (1867), and Portland State University (1946). Population: 583,776 (2010).
