Takehara-han

Japanese:
Takehara-han

Japanese dancer. Her real name was Sachiko. She was born in Tokushima City. In 1914 (Taisho 3), she entered the Yamatoya geisha school in the south of Osaka, where she learned Yamamura-ryu dance from Yamamura Chiyo. In 1930 (Showa 5), she moved to Tokyo, where she studied under Nishikawa Koisaburo II and Fujima Kanjuro VI. Without establishing a school, she perfected Kamigata-mai as a fresh and original stage dance, and began holding solo dance recitals in 1952 (Showa 27). Her ukiyo-e-reproductions of her dancing, which made the most of her beautiful appearance, were unparalleled, and her dances were also featured in the works of famous artists such as Ogura Yuki. Characterized by her intricate and sophisticated "dance of the heart," she continued to hold the "Takehara Hanmai-no-Kai" 40 times until she was 91 years old. In addition to "Snow," "Black Hair," "Sode no Tsuyu," and "Yoshiwara Hakkei," he also wrote many fine new works, including "Later Snow," "Iris," and "Ohara Goko." He also published a number of collections of haiku and essays. In 1988, he was selected as a Person of Cultural Merit.
