Kitsuki Domain

Japanese: 杵築藩 - きつきはん
Kitsuki Domain

During the Edo period, this domain ruled the Kitsuki region of Hayami County, Bungo Province (Kitsuki City, Oita Prefecture). It was a fudai daimyo (feudal lord). It is said that Maeda Gen'i entered the domain in 1595 (Bunroku 4), Sugihara Nagafusa in 1596 (Keicho 1), and Hayakawa Nagatoshi in 1597, but the details are unknown. In 1600, it was incorporated into the domain of Hosokawa Tadaoki. In 1632 (Kan'ei 9), Ogasawara Tadatomo was granted the Kitsuki domain a fief of 40,000 koku. In 1645 (Shoho 2), Matsudaira (Nomi) Hidechika was granted a fief of 37,000 koku. Of this, Hidechika divided 3,000 koku to his younger brother Shigenaga and 2,000 koku to Naomasa in 1682 (Tenwa 2). After Hidechika, Shigeyoshi, Shigeyasu, Chikazumi, Chikamitsu, Chikasada, Chikakata, Chikaaki, Chikayoshi, and Chikataka ruled the area for 220 years over 10 generations until the Meiji Restoration. In July 1871 (Meiji 4), it became Kitsuki Prefecture, and in November of the same year, it was incorporated into Oita Prefecture. The territory covered the eastern part of Kunisaki County (Higashi Kunisaki County) and part of Hayami County, and the source of water for agriculture was dependent on reservoirs. A famous local product is the green mat (also called Shichito mat or Bungo omote), which was introduced in the mid-17th century. In the area of education, the Learning Center was established in 1788 (Tenmei 8) at the suggestion of Miura Baien. In addition to Baien, other literary figures include Ayabe Keisai and his son Asada Goryu. The castle town of Kitsuki is also famous for its scenery, which is still preserved to this day.
