Primary succession, which occurs when the substrate at the start of succession is devoid of plants, including seeds and other reproductive organs, such as volcanic lava flows, proceeds as follows. In the example of a xerophytic series studied on lava of different eruption ages on Sakurajima, Kagoshima Prefecture, in the warm temperate zone, lichens and bryophytes first grow on the surface of the bare rocks.
