〘Noun〙① A container used to store gold coins during the Edo period. The name comes from the fact that it originally contained 1,000 ryo of gold. Later, it came to refer to small ones that could only hold 500 ryo, or large ones that could hold as much as 10,000 ryo. The size of the box also varies depending on the capacity, with 1,000 ryo of oban (100 oban coins), 1,000 ryo of koban (1,000 koban coins), and 1,000 ryo of ichibu gold coins (4,000 ichibu gold coins), so the size of the box is not necessarily the same. There is also a wide variety of styles, and they are usually made of wood such as pine, cypress, or zelkova, but there are also rare bronze ones, which are thought to have been stored in stone storehouses. *Haiku poem Taketamakawa (1750-76) 4 ``No response from the 1,000 ryo box''② ① Something very valuable that can produce ①. It also refers to a capable person. ※Sakehon Tsugen Sori (1787) 2 “For the two of you, this is a box of 1,000 ryo from Takeya.” Source: The Selected Edition of the Japanese Language Dictionary About the Selected Edition of the Japanese Language Dictionary Information |
