Stone bowl - Stone bowl
A type of stone container with a lid (a bowl). They can be found in Predynastic Egypt and the Shang Dynasty in China, but in Japan they have been excavated as grave goods from the Kofun period. They are made of jasper or talc. Jasper products are round in shape with a diameter of 3 to 10 cm and include those with short legs on all four sides of the base and those that are oval and legless. These have been excavated from 4th century kofun tombs. On the other hand, talc products are limited to oval-shaped and legless items, and are relics from the 5th century. Some are larger than jasper products, and the largest stone bowl was excavated from Hirakawa Kurumazuka Kofun in Joyo City, Kyoto Prefecture, measuring 21.5 cm in major axis, 15.5 cm in minor axis, and 18.0 cm in height.
