American astronomer. Born in California. After graduating from Williams College in 1887, he worked at Livermore College before becoming a professor of mathematics at the University of the Pacific in 1891, a member of the Lick Observatory attached to the University of California in 1895, its vice director in 1923, and director from 1930 to 1935. He also edited and published The New General Catalogue of Double Stars in 1932. This is an authority that records the positions, magnitudes, spectral types, and angular separations of 17,180 pairs of double stars, and was awarded the Gold Medal by the Royal Astronomical Society of the United Kingdom.
