A city in southeastern Ontario, Canada. It is adjacent to the major US city of Detroit. It is located on the east bank of the Detroit River. The average temperature in January is -4°C, and in July is 22°C, making it warm for Canada. The annual precipitation is 800mm. It is located at the tip of the Ontario Peninsula, which is covered with Quaternary glacial deposits and has a gentle undulating surface. There was an Indian settlement before white people lived there. A French fort was built in Detroit in 1701, and villages were established on both sides of the Detroit River. The fort became American property in 1796, and it developed into a ferry terminal across from Detroit and a railway terminal. In 1858 it was named Walkerville, and in 1892 it became a city with a population of 10,000. It was named Windsor in 1935. It faces the Detroit River, which is also the St. Lawrence Seaway, and is a transportation hub where five railways converge, including the Canadian National Railway, the Canadian Pacific, and the New York Central. It is also home to processing plants for various agricultural products shipped from the rich agricultural regions of Canada. A railroad tunnel, a national highway tunnel, and a bridge connect to Detroit on the opposite coast. As part of Detroit, the center of the US automobile industry, there are many automobile and parts factories in the city. Pharmaceutical and machinery industries are also well developed. The port is an important import port from the US. Unusually for southern Ontario, the majority of residents are of French descent, accounting for about 20% of the population, second only to the British, who make up about 50%. The University of Windsor (1957) is located here. Population: 210,891 (2011). Windsor |
